In the heart of Venice, where history and romance intertwine, Casanova comes back to life – not through dusty letters or old legends, but on a vibrant stage in Piazza San Marco. “Casanova Opera Pop” is a bold musical retelling of the life of one of Italy’s most infamous yet misunderstood figures. Combining classical grandeur with modern pop energy, the production reimagines Giacomo Casanova not just as a seducer, but as a thinker, a rebel, and a man of contradictions. Gian Marco Schiaretti brings this iconic role to life with intensity, elegance, and soul.
🎭 Inside Casanova Opera Pop
Interview with Gian Marco Schiaretti
How did you first get involved with Casanova Opera Pop? What drew you to the project?
I was in Seoul with Notre Dame, during Covid time, and I occasionally saw the audition band… I thought the subject could have been very interesting to explore, and I was somehow yearning to come back performing into my country.
How did you prepare for the role – especially in terms of physicality and fencing?
I started by studying and reading a lot of material and Casanova letters… I could grasp his culture and charm… I “only” needed to make these feelings mine to provide the best version I could. I didn’t spend too much time on thinking about his relationship with the women he met through his entire life… it was the less interesting side.
For the fencing side, we had a fence champion, Stefano Pantano, working with us during rehearsals.
Is there a particular scene or moment in the show that always gives you chills on stage?
It’s the moment when I find myself in prison… and I see there could be no way to escape… and all my life runs away in front of my eyes.
Do you have a favorite song from the show? What makes it special for you?
The theme “Incubo Notturno” is a moment I love… It’s powerful on stage with great vocals to deliver… It’s one of my favourite moments.
If you had to describe Casanova Opera Pop in just three words, what would they be?
Passion, seduction, freedom.
What do you think makes Casanova Opera Pop resonate with modern audiences?
I think first, it’s a great opportunity to get to know deeper one of the most incredible figure of the 1700s… Plus, the music from Red Canzian, the lyrics of Miki Porru, and the development of the story based on the book of Matteo Strukul engage the audience in a perfect way… It’s a fresh, solid, vibrant 2-hour escaping (from real life) show.
Does it feel special to perform in Venice?
Venice is THE PLACE, there’s no other place in the world where this story could be told with such a strong impact and surrounding… Definitely, the best portrayal of and for the show.
